Membership Interview

Connect With New City!
At the membership interview, you will be asked to talk about what 5 questions mean to you. Additional questions may be asked, including how you plan to support and get involved at New City Church.
  1. Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope save in His sovereign mercy?
    • What difference does it make to see yourself as "justly deserving God's displeasure"?
  2. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the Gospel?
    • How is Christ "alone" significant for your understanding of salvation?
    • How is "resting" on Jesus realized practically in your life?
  3. Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes the followers of Christ?
    • Regarding your membership, it is not important to us whether you are struggling with a particular sin or sins - although we want to be of help if you are. We all struggle from time to time and need help. However, it is important that you (1) have Biblical convictions about what God expects from his people in terms of obedience and that (2) you don't give up on your struggle against sin in your life. With this in mind, are there currently any areas where you are knowingly accommodating sin and not fighting against it?
    • The phrase, "in humble reliance upon the Holy Spirit" implies use of the means of grace, including attending church, participation in the sacraments, regular Bible reading and prayer, and fellowship. What are your habits regarding your walk with God? If none, what obstacles do you face in establish- ing private or family devotions as a regular practice?
    • Being in a small group is an excellent way to develop significant Christian relationships (though not the only way). Are you currently involved in a small group, or have plans to get involved in one? If not, where are you building significant relationships with other Christians who can encourage and pray for you as well as hold you accountable in your Christian life?
  4. Do you promise to support the Church in its worship and work to the best of your ability?
    • To review: Members are expected to walk with God daily; worship with the people of God each week; be involved in either a fellowship group or a ministry team; and be good stewards of their talents and finances.
    • Outside of Sunday worship gatherings, how are you now and how will you in the future, be involved in the ministry of the church? Are there areas where you are involved outside of the church?
    • What do you believe to be the Christian's biblical responsibility regarding the use of wealth? Do you view the tithe as the minimum Christian standard of giving to God's work?
  5. Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the Church, and promise to study its purity and peace?
    • Note: "To study the churches purity and peace" in this context is to be devoted to pursuing the welfare and wholeness of the life of the church.
    • What is your understanding of this commitment? Are you willing to help your brothers and sisters in Christ by lovingly practicing Christian discipline with them? Are you willing to quench divisiveness in your own life and in the lives of others.
